6 out of 10

According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO) the female population is more sensitive to visual impairment and blindness compared to the male population.

The factors that explain this disproportion by gender are associated with longevity, less access to health services and false beliefs about the use of prescription glasses.

6 out of 10

In the world, the world's blind population is 39 million, of which 6 out of 10 are women. Environmental pollution, exposure to UV rays, work in front of the computer, changes in lighting and smoking are some risks that can cause eye stress, eyestrain, damage to the retina and cornea, points out Roberto Tapia , Education coordinator in Transitions Optical Latin America .

I do not like to wear glasses ...

In GetQoralHealth and through a survey conducted by Transitions Optical in women from 25 to 50 years of age in Mexico, we present you the "pretexts" most used not to use glasses.

1. "They are very expensive." 3 out of 10 women who need glasses decide not to wear them due to inadequate graduation or the high cost of them.

2. "I do not like them." 18% of women report not wearing glasses because they do not like them.

3. "I do not need them." 10% of women say they do not wear glasses because they feel that despite the recommendation they think they see well.

4. "They will make fun of me." Although it sounds strange, 8% of women avoid using glasses for fear of teasing.

5. "I do not look good". More than 30% of the female population expressed that they have the feeling of not looking good or attractive with their glasses on.

It is better prevent

The doctor José Luis Merino , emphasizes that this situation should not occur, since 80% of cases are preventable or treatable if you visit the ophthalmologist or optometrist at least once a year.

Other recommendations that the specialist indicates are: take a balanced diet, perform some exercise, protect your eyes, mainly on sunny days and cloudy through lenses that block 100% UVA and UVB.
