6 million people could die from tobacco

The World Health Organization (WHO) noted in its latest report on the epidemic global smoking, that during 2011, almost 6 million people will die. Divided as follows:

 

  • More than 5 million consumers and former consumers
  • More than 600 thousand will be non-smokers who were exposed to smoke

By 2030, tobacco could kill 8 million people a year. The consumption of this drug is one of the factors that most contributes to the epidemics of noncommunicable diseases, which include cardiac , the accidents cerebrovascular , the cancers and the emphysema , these represent 63% of deaths.

Thanks to sites reserved for smoking , the WHO ensures that more than 739 million people in 31 countries are already protected by extensive laws that prohibit smoking in enclosed spaces. This figure represents an increase of more than double, with respect to the 2009 report, in which it was recorded that more than 353 million people were protected in 15 countries.

Burkina Faso, Spain, Nauru, Pakistan, Peru and Thailand are among the last countries that have banned the use of tobacco in closed public spaces and in workplaces.

WHO considers that health warnings in packs, they are an effective way for people to stop using tobacco, and reduce the attractiveness for those who are not yet addicted. At this point he points out that Mexico, Peru and the United States have been the last countries to demand this type of warning.
