5 tips to ask for a salary increase

Asking for a raise is one of the most stressful times in working life; however, according to a survey conducted by the website trabajos.com, 8 out of 10 Mexican workers will request an increase in land, promotion or promotion in 2013.

According to the survey, among the strategies that Mexicans will choose to ask for an increase are: 76% will seek to meet directly with their direct boss to propose the proposal; 13% will approach the owners, and 6% will send an email informing their concern.

So, what will be the best strategy to ask for an increase, promotion or job promotion? To know what factors you should take into account, as well as some tips that will guide you in a better way, we present the following tips, according to CNN information:

1. Before approaching to ask for the increase of salary or promotion, it is important to have a base: that is, an important result that endorses the request, and from which you can begin to negotiate.

2. Make a list of achievements. List the contributions you've had, the problems you helped solve; the figures increased; weekends worked; the extra hours worked, and the willingness to support the company with new projects.

3. The best time to negotiate is when the company prepares its annual budgets, although not all companies disclose them. While there is no specific date to do so, it is important to try that it is not a bad time for the company or business.

4. An important rule is "not trying to sell ourselves as the best in our work, not threatening the organization with leaving it, or inventing that we have other offers to consider if we do not receive what we want," says MargaritaChico, general director of trabajando.com Mexico.

5. Be direct. Take into account the hierarchies in your job. If you want to ask for a salary increase, communicate it first to your direct boss, do not skip it, go with other superiors or directors, much less spread it among your colleagues than with your boss.

And when you do, find a way to tie your reasons with the goals of the company, since it is not about asking to ask, but also implies a greater commitment.

It is important to keep in mind that it is a negotiation, so you must leave personal aspects aside and your opinion, feel or way of living with the bosses or employers, so that it does not become a "personal" issue or hurt susceptibilities.

Asking for an increase or promotion is not only about acquiring a higher salary, not everything is money, so you can negotiate many other aspects of your work, benefits, breaks and others.
