5 celebrities with bipolar disorder

The alarms jumped when we learned a few weeks ago that the actress Catherine Zeta-Jones she had been admitted to a rehabilitation center to treat bipolar disorder, which is treated for the second time.

Somehow, this sad news made visible a disease that, for many years, was known as manic depressive disorder, a mental disorder that can be controlled through medication and therapy, but which was named bipolar disorder.

Millions of people in the world live with him and in Mexico, according to data from the Mexican Association of Bipolar Disorder (AMATE) , two million people suffer from it although only half receive attention due to lack of economic resources and programs aimed at mental health.

Bipolar disorder is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain (alterations in the production of neurotransmitters that destabilize brain chemistry) and sometimes it is hereditary. At any age, it can be suffered and half of the cases develop before the age of 25, but it can also be diagnosed in older adults.

Celebrities suffering from bipolar disorder

In addition to Catherine Zeta-Jones , other celebrities who suffer it are:

1. Carrie Fishe r. The actress known for having played Princess Leia, in "Star Wars", had to be hospitalized after the publication of a video where she shows atypical behavior, according to her spokeswoman. She can move quickly from unpredictable episodes of euphoria or hyperactivity (mania), to acute stages of sadness and depression (depression), in what would be an uncontrollable emotional "up and down".

2. Mel Gibson. The actor and director confessed for the first time, in the documentary "Acting Class 1977", that he had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. And he used that diagnosis many times, according to psychologists such as Carole Liberman, "to justify his outbursts of violence and narcissism."

3. Britney Spears. When in 2008 she was locked in a hotel with her son, Jayden James, a year old, and then admitted to the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, her family explained that the pop princess suffered from a bipolar psychological picture . Although his diagnosis was not made public, the manic episodes he had for years would confirm it.

4. Ari Telch. The Mexican actor has admitted suffering from bipolar disorder after staying in a psychiatric clinic. He has confessed that both the disorder and his alcohol problems have cost him his personal relationships and his professional career.

5. Kurt Cobain. As reported by his cousin nurse, Beverly Cobain in the book "When nothing matters", Kurt was diagnosed as a young man with Attention Deficit and later with Bipolar Disorder. But he could never get an adequate treatment. In April 1994, the singer of Nirvana was found shot dead in the head. The suicide could never be confirmed.

It can be years without bipolar disorder being correctly diagnosed, since the symptoms may appear as separate incidents. Without treatment, the disease can interfere with the life of the person and lead to injury or, as in the case of Nirvana singer, have the worst of the endings.
