115 years of X-rays for the benefit of health

At the end of the 19th century, November 8, 1895 , the German physicist Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen He made some of the greatest discoveries in the history of medicine: X-rays , so called because, at the beginning, the nature of the same was not known. Later it was discovered that they are a way of electromagnetic radiation Similar to radio waves, microwaves, visible light and gamma rays.

This discovery, which meets 115 years , has been very useful for the advancement of medicine , since it has favored the diagnosis and the early localization of anomalies in the osseous system and in vital organs . Some examples of the benefits of this technology are: the detection of fractures , sprains , malformations, cysts and even decalcification of the osteoporosis . Unfortunately, its use does not have a satisfactory efficiency in brain Y muscles .

Do not forget that, regardless of their great qualities, the X-rays they do not stop being radiation , that is why extreme safety measures , such as the use of special clothing in those that face manipulation and that are exposed constantly to these.

Present and future of X-rays

Currently, systems are being developed that will allow the integration of images obtained through various techniques (CT, nuclear magnetic resonance, positron emission tomography, ultrasound) to obtain correlations between the physiology and the anatomy of the patient.

Another area in continuous development is the reconstruction of three-dimensional images from data tomographic , to take into account in detail physical processes such as the dispersion and the effect of the spatial resolution of the detectors. The ability to obtain three-dimensional images and manipulate them in real time has allowed the development of virtual surgery and its application in reconstructive surgery and implementation of prosthesis . Finally, in the radiotherapy area, attempts are being made to develop simulation systems that use methods of Monte Carlo (3D) for the planning of treatments in real time.
